Cheese Weasel Day on the awesome Techcrunch blog!

“Unknown to most, April 3rd is Cheese Weasel Day, the holiday where the Cheese Weasel brings dairy goodness to all the good boys and girls in the tech industry. While the origins are murky, it seems to have started around 1992 when a weasel was spotted carrying a Kraft Single. This, they assumed, must be the Cheese Weasel, and therefore, that it must be Cheese Weasel Day. What was the weasel going to do with the cheese? He must be off to put it under the keyboards of good tech workers everywhere and that’s just what we expect you to do today! Huzzah!” Read more on Techcrunch

Some time in the early ‘90s, a couple of techies in Silicon Valley were hanging out at a park when they caught a glimpse of a weasel scurrying by with a slice of wrapped American cheese. They knew in an instant it must be the Cheese Weasel delivering a piece of cheese to some good little techie. After all, someone must be showing all the good techie boys and girls some appreciation. The Origins of the Cheese Weasel

Saturday, February 9th, 2013

The Cheese Weasel Day  story  started in Silicon Valley in the early 90′s. A couple out for a day in the park on April 3rd noticed a weasel carrying a piece of wrapped cheese and wondered what was going on. They decided they must have had a rare sighting of the Cheese Weasel. Their story eventually morphed into the urban myth of the Cheese Weasel who brings cheese to the good little tech industry workers, leaving a piece of cheese under their mouse pads on April 3rd.

Could this be the cheese weasel?

Since that time, the celebration of the Cheese Weasel has grown and become an Internet holiday tradition that celebrates the contributions of workers in the tech industry. Tech workers get a lot of grief from people and are often under-appreciated. Cheese Weasel Day is a fun way to say thank you to them.

Over the years people have made art, music, prose and poetry to support and celebrate the myth of the Cheese Weasel. It’s all for fun and just to be nice to people who do a lot of good things for us. I like to think of CWD as the milk of human kindness, curdled. As we all know, kindness is a fondue-mental human need.

So, what’s your contribution to the Cheese Weasel Day fun going to be this year?

Cheese Weasel Day Poetry

The Cheese-loving Shepherd to His Love

Eat cheese with me and be my Love,
And we will all the pleasures prove
That dills and Wensleydales and Tetillas, Or Edams or Havarti yields.

And we will sit upon a sweater,
And see the shepherds eat some Cheddar
By shallow rivers, at whose falls
Melodious birds eat Emmentals.

This year the cheese is spreading even more! See the home page and blog post on CrunchGear.com

Tech blogger John Biggs says,

The practice of the holiday seems to spread through word of mouth. I first heard of it when I showed up to work on April 3rd many years ago and a fantastic spread of exotic cheeses was laid out in the middle of the office. It wasn’t until a few hours later, after the food coma had started to wear down, that I started to think about the legend, “The Cheese Weasel leaves cheese under the keyboards of good tech workers… cheese under the keyboards… keyboards.” I looked, and there was a cheese single, still wrapped. I wonder how long it would have lasted had I not found it.

Happy Cheese Weasel Day!

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

What in the world is Cheese Weasel Day you ask?

Cheese Weasel Day is a real holiday that started on the internet sometime in the last 15 years. Like most holidays, Cheese Weasel Day is shrouded in history and traditions that many celebrants may not understand.

Until recently Cheese Weasel Day, has been celebrated quietly on April 3rd by many around the world. This holiday is a special fun day dedicated to “all the good little boys and girls” in the high-tech industry.

Legend has it (and the internet has many legends) the Cheese Weasel travels the world, leaving a bit of cheese under keyboards. The type really doesn’t matter though Kraft Singles were once the cheese of choice. However, depending on how often you look under your keyboard, the C.W. might place a wedge of cheddar instead.

That’s all you need to know, just go with it and have fun!

Here is how you can celebrate:

  1. Send someone you know in the tech sector a Cheese Weasel Day Greeting card. You’ll find Cheese Weasel Day E-cards
  2. Arrange secretly for a slice of Cheese to be placed under the mouse pad of a tech person you know.
  3. Check back in a few days to make sure they found the Cheese. (Just to be sanitary. I mean, if they leave it there indefinitely, it could really smell cheesy)
  4. Go here and learn the Cheese Weasel Song so you can sing it at your own Weasel celebration

Are you feeling these actions are a little too cheesy to try? That’s the spirit of Cheese Weasel Day!
