The Only Internet Holiday: Cheese Weasel Day April 3rd
Edmond, Oklahoma- March 15, 2010
They make your email work again. They fix your computer when it crashes. They politely answer technical questions they have heard 100 times before. And now there is an official holiday just for the technical people who make your life easier.
April 3rd is Cheese Weasel Day (CWD) and is the only Internet holiday. A quick web search shows CWD started around 1993. CWD is traditionally celebrated as a fun day dedicated to appreciating people who work in the tech industry. Legend has it (and the internet has many legends) that the Cheese Weasel travels the world on April 3rd, leaving a bit of cheese under keyboards or mouse pads of good techie boys and girls.
Chris Forbes, of Edmond, Oklahoma, has been an advocate of Cheese Weasel Day since 2005. Forbes says it’s more about showing the people who make our technology work a little gratitude, than about weasels and cheese, “People ask, ‘Why cheese?’ and ‘What’s up with weasels?’ But most people realize it doesn’t matter, since they don’t know what USB and URL stand for either. It’s just a fun way to say thanks.” he said.
Eric Granata: a graphic and web designer and iPhone app developer from Oklahoma City is also a Cheese Weasel Day promoter. He says it’s easy to celebrate Cheese Weasel Day, “You can plan a party to celebrate the contributions of your technical friends. Make something with cheese. Food makes it more enjoyable when you socialize with your techie peeps!” Granata said.
Forbes and Granata have teamed up the last few years to raise awareness about the holiday with the website http://cheeseweaselday.com, developed by Granata. “This year we have added a Twitter account and Facebook group also.” Granata added.
“We want to raise awareness about Cheese Weasel Day so we are putting a little more into it this year. We use technology without understanding how it works. It’s like magic. Magic that freezes up or crashes right when you need it most–which requires most of us to make a fast call to those IT wizards in our lives. These are the people we take for granted all too often. Cheese Weasel Day is a way to say thanks… and eat cheese” Forbes said.
The holiday seems to be growing. There are sites with Cheese Weasel e-cards, an official CWD t-shirt, and an official song. “Every year there seems to be something new coming out for CWD” Granata said.
Forbes and Granata have listed a few ways you can celebrate Cheese Weasel Day 2010:
- Arrange secretly for a slice of cheese to be placed under the mouse pad of a tech person you know and appreciate.
- Plan a Cheese Weasel Day party with all the trimmings. Melt fondue, make grilled cheese sandwiches, eat nachos, anything cheesy works.
- Do an Internet search for the Cheese Weasel Song and learn it so you can sing it at your own CWD celebration.
- Give your favorite tech person a Thank You shout out on Twitter using the hash tags #cheeseweaselday or #cwd
